I bet you didn’t know that Red Dry wines actually lower blood sugar, help you loose weight, lower cholesterol, are high in antioxidants (resveratrol) and have anti-cancer properties! That’s a lot of good health in a bottle! According to Dr. Martin Wabitsch, MD, PhD, researcher from the University of Ulm in Germany, resveratrol in wine reduces the amount of pre-fat cells that are converted to fat cell. Wine also lowers sugar load during a meal by blocking in the liver the conversion of protein to glucose. Secondly resveratrol lowers glucose absorption through the small intestine and into the bloodstream, which prevents blood sugar spike. Dry Red wines have the higher concentration of resveratrol. Pinot Noir, Cabernet sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot are highest in resveratrol, followed by white wines.
If you’re on insulin or insulin secreting medicines be careful, red wine will lower blood sugar and potentially cause hypoglycemia. Always monitor blood sugar level before and after a meal to be able to adjust your medicine.
Now don’t go crazy the daily amount of Red Wine to drink is one 5 ounce glass for women and two 5 ounce glasses for men.
